Electronic Data Interchange (EDI)
The Federal
Acquisition Streamlining Act (FASA) of 1994 requires
the
implementation
of
Electronic
Commerce at all government buying offices. Electronic
Data Interchange (EDI) is a form of Electronic
Commerce (EC). Hundreds of DoD
and civilian agencies currently direct procurement
activity through EDI/EC networks, which are serviced
by Value-Added Networks (VAN) such as SOS.

EDI is a computer-to-computer
method of processing routine business activities
such as RFQ's, Responses to RFQ's, Purchase orders,
and Invoices. With EDI services, paper documents
are replaced with standard electronic formats.
These are identified by a numbering system, some
of which include:

- 810 - Invoice
- 820 - Payment Order Remittance Advice
- 824 - Application Advice
- 836 - Award Notice
- 840 - Request For Quote (RFQ)

- 843 - Response To RFQ
- 850 - Purchase Order
- 856 - Shipping Notice
- 864 - Text
- 997 - Functional Acknowledgment
